Nigeria Police Force-National Cybercrime Center Prowling for Actions – Segun Olugbile

In a significant development, Mr Segun Olugbile recently attended the first end of the year dinner of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center in Abuja.

The event marks a pivotal moment, highlighting the success of a persistent policy advocacy in cybercrime countermeasures over many years
and a positive response from policymakers.

Mr. Segun Olugbile, who’s a prime advocate of cybersecurity, and a President of the Global Network for Cybersolution (GNC), recalled the leading role his organization played in the previous attempt to facilitate the establishment of a Nigeria Police Cybercrime Emergency Response Center (NIPOCERT) between 2010 and 2012.

Despite initial setbacks, including budgetary diversions by then government, the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment in cybercrime counter-measures has now borne fruit with the establishment of the Nigeria Police Force – National Cybercrime Center ( NPF-NCC).

Expressing joy and commendation, Amb. Olugbile praised the commitment of the Men and Officers of the Nigeria Police Force for their resilience in bringing the NPF-NCC to fruition. The center boasts smart and well-trained cybercops, supported by INTERPOL and other international partners

Addressing the critical issue of cybercrime and related incidences, Ambassador Olugbile emphasized urgent need for prioritisation and operationalization of the national cybersecurity programme to complement the Nigeria Police Force’s effort.

He celebrated the efforts of the Commissioner of Police Mr. Uche Ifeanyi, who is also the pioneer Director of the NPF-NCC, for his dedication to developing young officers and the center’s establishment. With the NPF-NCC now operational, Nigeria sends a strong message to cybercriminals, signaling a collective effort and readiness of Nigeria Police to detect, investigate and arrest cybercriminals and safeguard the nation’s digital landscape.

He also reiterates a strategic need for integration and coordination of national cybersecurity capabilities among the security, law enforcement and intelligence agencies as critically essential in the ongoing response against complex cyber threats, whilst calling for an urgent non-negotiable and sustainable funding to ensure the country’s cybersecurity resilience is sustained, updated and enhanced.
